Hello,

I have a Savage 4 that I wanted to try and activate the 3D stuff. I have read
lots about the DRI development on the DRI Wiki pages and went through the
mailing list archives quite a bit, but I am still stuck on a few beginner
questions. I want to compile the savage.o from the 2.0.0 branch. I downloaded
the source from CVS and am ready to start.

Background: I have a Savage4 AGP card on a K7S5A motherboard using Knoppix 3.3
which uses kernel 2.4-22-xfs. I downloaded the savage.o module (version
1.1.27t) from http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html and it works well for
me. I also downloaded the Xfree binary in the directory which is 4.3.99.16 in
order to use it.

My questions.
At http://dri.sourceforge.net/doc/DRIcompile.html it seems to imply in order
to compile the DRI stuff, I need to compile my kernel. What is the reason for
this? Is it simply to ensure the kernel has certain things loaded? I know
mine has module support which, based on other pages I have read, is the most
important thing. Is it absolutely required to compile a new kernel or is
this more geared to the assumption that someone might be running an old
kernel from an old distribution (like a 2.2 kernel)?

Also, in reading the mail list, it seems implied that I have to compile XFree
in order to use a DRI module. Is this also absolutely necessary? Is running
the 4.3.99 binary good enough? Right now all I have pulled from CVS is the
savage branch.

Once I know where I stand and how to start, I will probably be bugging people
with other questions as I wade through the compilation, but I will cross that
bridge when I get to it.

Thanks for any information to start with.
