How fast is the CPU?  I've seen 200FPS in glxgears in software with a 2GHz P4.

From your second post it looks like the same issue as 
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=dri-users&m=108328244131329&w=2 .  Run ldd on 
glxgears and see where it's getting libGL from.

I'm pulling down the SRPM now, I'll take a look in the morning.  Hopefully the 
patch will jump out at me.  If this is Jakub's patch causing problems I'd 
like to come up with a solution that preserves binary compatibility, since 
I'd like to see that patch (or something like it) integrated.
