Look back in the archives. There are hundreds of messages about redesigning DRM
and FB. Getting PCI support is a related problem to all of those messages. Right
now Xfree is violating a lot of kernel rules with it's PCI support.
I'm working on mesa-solo. Mesa solo is targeted to be a standalone GL stack that
doesn't need X around. Most of what mesa-solo needs is currently in the mesa
tree, but some areas are missing: secondary reset, PCI support, mode setting,
cursors.
Keithp is working on a version of xserver that is targeted to run on mesa-solo.
This xserver will use GL for all drawing and contain no 2D drivers. By using GL
for drawing xserver will be able to do UIs like the Mac and MS Longhorn.
Driver support for this is currently at an impasse. Some people want mode
setting only done via fbdev. But when multiple heads are involved fbdev would
then have to take over memory management. Memory management for GL is
complicated and the code for it is currently in DRM. Hopefully this will get
sorted out at OLS, there are sessions scheduled to talk about the problem.
