Yeah, looking back on that it was a bad idea.  I've got a change here to
fix it and use fixed-size types in the interface, only in the process I
rewrote the whole thing and axed ~350 lines of code.  I'm going to test
when I get back from camping (Tuesday).  I bet the same thing I'm doing
for sis could be done to via, but I don't have any via hardware.
