maybe I'm mis-understanding you.  you can set up the framebuffer as
tiled or linear on radeon.  most 2d accel stuff should just work as
long as you are consistent one way or another.  OTOH, I've never tried
setting up a tiled FB on radeon.  the savage driver in DRI cvs does
this.  the savage 3D engine only works in tile mode.
