You're right. It must have been the i915 DRI driver. Looks like the
i830 DRI driver is no longer been built. I assume that it was replaced
by the i915 DRI driver. It was definitely not the indirect fallback as
it was 3D accelerated ("direct rendering: Yes" in glxinfo output) and
colors were correct when I disabled direct rendering.
