Actually, I more or less forgot to remove that comment. I wrote that
part before I knew how that hardware bug has to be handled in case of
more than 2 texture units. But I asked someone (can't remember who) who
has docs and the reference driver, and apparently it is not needed. I
also believe people have tested with texture units set to 2 and it still
locked up. But it might be worth experimenting with that hardware bug
workaround maybe, it might not be fully documented (?).
