Take a look at the latest radeon ddx in xorg cvs as well has Hui's
latest patch here:

and this older patch here:
http://www.botchco.com/alex/radeon/hy0/x440_radeon_4_newchips.diff

the current cvs DDX uses the bios to get info on what's attached, etc.
