The problem has to do with VT's and X's input system.  There were some
threads on dri-devel, xorg, and LKML a few months back (I think
started by Jon Smirl) about this.  There are several patches floating
around to enable this functionality.  I'm not sure when an official
version will hit any offical trees.  I think the details are still
being sorted out.  I'd like to see this kind of support as well.
