I saw something like this too, when I implemented and debugged the savage fast path. I don't think it's glxgear's fault. More likely a problem further up in the mesa pipeline. (or are you bypassing the pipeline in the r300 driver?) The t_dd_dmatmp.h template ignores extra vertices that don't add up to a whole primitive.
