I updated to the latest r300 code in cvs tonight in an effort to do some testing and noticed an immediate regression. glxgears locked up almost immediately, and neverputt locked up within a few minutes.

I experienced similar issues when trying Bens vb patch for the first time. These issues went away when i placed small cooling fan near the card.

Can't do that - I have a notebook. Are you absolutely sure that this is
what helped ? It would be very worrying if these ATI cards can overheat
without warning and purely due to software.

I can test this again. IMHO, Radeon 9600 pros and 9550 cards iv seen have
way too small heat sink(no fan!). My cards heat sink is very hot when run
without extra cooling.

Then we could try to deal with this by inserting wait states.

If so, this would suck majorly, especially if there is no temperature sensor to tell how loaded the card is.

Well, it seems unlikely that it was/is temperature related (my most recent test didn't lock up, so something may have been modified in the last 24 hours to fix it). I actually have a small cooling fan in the slot below the graphics card simply because my 9200 (with no fan) *would* overheat.. So now I have a 9800, with a fan and heat sink, an open case on my desktop (with a desk fan pointed at the desk) and a smaller cooling fan in the PCI slot :-)
