The serial line is probably coming back at the default baud rate and
you were setting it higher when you were testing it.

That might be, but this happened both when booting with "console=ttyS0,115200n8" and with "console=ttyS0", which I assumed should set it to the default rate.

I altro tried to see if writing to the port would get it working again, e.g. as reported here:

but that didn't work either.
