after spending way too much time to get this working under Mandrake /
Mandriva LE 2005, I eventually got myself a Suse 9.3. That one
supported the (non-accelerated) i915GM out of the box, and after
installing the last snapshot of the i915 driver acceleartion seems to
work very well. So I guess the problem is with Mandriva's X11
distribution.
