Actually, AFAIR all of Rage128, R100 and R200 had pretty decent support
including rather shortly after release, that may have been related to
companies working with ATI to make it happen though.

As I pointed out earlier (on the xorg mailing list IIRC), the AVIVO
display engine is completely different from any previous ATI PC display
engine (and much better, of course :). Trying to get it working by
modifying the display engine code in the current drivers is hopeless.
