Amplab guys are always worth listening to. Streamlib and brickhouse provide additional, somewhat more pragmatic resources as well (not the sampling part).
What drill can do in the short run is to keep good logs of queries (to drive sampling strategies later) and to think about how and whether on the fly query adjustment is a viable option.
