newest patch (3/10/14) is significantly smaller while it was based off the
current master, which appears to have the previous patch applied, but no commit
that says the changeset was incorporated. I cleaned up a re-organized the tests
a bit further, and made some changes so all tests (including those ignored for
dependence on binary files ) are passing.
