I note that there is no README or really any kind of “how to start” instructions in the tarball. That would be helpful but is not a reason to stop the candidate. followed these instructions for distributed cluster (just one node in my case): https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/DRILL/Deploying+Apache+Drill+in+a+Clustered+Environment. I then followed the query sample data instructions: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/DRILL/Apache+Drill+in+10+Minutes#ApacheDrillin10Minutes-QuerySampleData noted these doc issues in the above: * state that Oracle Java is required. I used OpenJDK without trouble. * mention MapR specifically (/opt/mapr) which is probably not appropriate * talks about editing drill-override in a way that I found very unclear. It’s not clear what is supposed to be edited. Of course I know what to edit so I did that. :^) * say you need to specify the ZK information. That doesn’t seem to be true since the drillbit reads the drill conf file as far as I can tell. * mention specifying a userid & password when starting sqlline which has no meaning at this point * the sample query doc assumes a relative path for the parquet queries (`apache-drill-0.4.0-incubating/sample-data/region.parquet`) which depends on where you installed Drill. Absolute paths work fine. I ran various additional simple queries chosen at random against the sample data. No significant issues found. I also observed this minor item running various queries: * I note that the sqlline client starts and indicates its version (1.1.6) rather than the Drill version which could be confusing to end users Minor things but nothing serious in my mind, hence +1.
