Thought I'd mention our positive experience with the Supermicro 7045B (X7DBE motherboard) and the ahci driver.
Previously we've been running this board with the raid controller in compatibility mode and only using four of the drive slots. After reading various posts in this forum I decided to load the ahci driver package from the release 57 iso and see what happens. After modifying the bios settings to use AHCI mode we're able to: - See the drives in up to 6 slots - Build ZFS pools on them - Hot remove a drive from the box and Solaris correctly handles it with the ZFS utils reporting the correct status, etc. In compatibility mode sometimes this experiment would cause Solaris to hang. - We're unable to hot plug in a drive and have it recognized, a reboot is required before the drive is seen. Overall, this is very positive, thank you to the Solaris team. Note that we have not done any I/O performance tests yet so nothing to report there.
