I'm not sure about HD features, but generally nearly all nVidia and
Intel products are supported. The nVidia products usually are faster
(for 3D stuff), more powerful, but are also more power hungry/hotter,
and closed source. The Intel products are generally not as
full-featured, and not available as discrete graphics boards
(motherboard only), but they are fully open source, and support the main
features needed by any modern desktop.

ATI is much more of a crapshoot. Their newest products in particular
are likely not to be well supported, and historically they have not been
terribly helpful in getting code and/or specs into the hands of people
needed to make their products work well on anything other than Windows.
Rumors abound that this may be changing, but as always, I'll take a bird
in hand for two in the bush.

My first choice is on-board Intel graphics for most of the stuff I do,
because core functionality, power efficiency, and open source are all
important to me. Some of the nVidia offerings are nearly as nice (I
use a Quadro NVS285 lower end passively cooled product), and they have a
wider range of products and discrete cards.

There are other players, but they are really in the noise -- Matrox and
S3/Via, and you will probably not find them as well supported.
