IIRC, the RTL8029AS is a NatSemi DP8390 core married to a PCI bus interface. The 8390 was the core of the Novell NE2000. The 8390 was pretty basic in terms of functionality and had a handful of gotchas, that, if I recall correctly, are faithfully reproduced in the RTL8029 ;-)
