use http://blogs.sun.com/dmick/entry/diagnosing_kernel_hangs_panics_with to 
figure out where the panic is.

If you discover the name of the driver you think is doing the damage, add
-B"disable-<drivername>=true" to your Grub kernel line; that will prevent the 
driver from loading.
