The solution was to disable power management on the drive.  Since I'm not a Mac 
or Windows user I had to download the software from the Seagate web site and 
find someone with a Mac to apply the setting (I had reformatted the drive 
minutes after I unpacked it, so I didn't have the Windows/Mac software on it 
anymore).  The drive still went offline until I also modified /etc/power.conf.  
It's been working well since.
