As the token "user" here: I do actually use DESC on a fairly regular basis. It's quick and convenient, but I've always thought of it as an interactive shell feature. I'm absolutely fine with it going away, so long as there is some sane way to get a smart-user readable view of the data.
Given how pluggable everything is going to be, I wonder if it would make sense to have a "mysqlisms" plugin which provides the various features that are getting ripped out of the core, but that somebody out there can't live without.
