Anyway, something not too complicated.

in PHP land we have so far been living fine with just a single
directory for all extensions/plugins ... or actually we get
along with two of them across two different repositories:

 php-src/ext/*  ->  all bundled extensions, about 80+
 pecl/*         ->  all standalone extensions, about 200+

and while we have categorized them in the documentation
we seem to be getting along fine with having them all in
one place in the source ...
