I suggest waiting until we have a large audience. MySQL history with character sets has been long and troubled, and every addition in that department was done to please a growing user base. In our current situation, with most of the contributors being in North America, the problems won't surface easily. As soon as Drizzle starts being used by thousands and then by millions, we may be in trouble if we cut too much. IMO, we can cut the character sets when we have a comprehensive test suite and a reasonable user base that feels satisfied. You can set UTF8 as default, but leave open the chance for people to use other character sets.
