When used implicitly, they're bad most of the time. However, I don't think we can get rid of them completely. you mentioned date to string (and string to date, I'm not sure why we need to have it be a string at all, except in the output formatting -- if we got rid of that it would fix the 0 = 0000-00-00 00:00:00 issues)... are we keeping any BINARY
