Related to Brian's question about CONVERT and CAST, can we get rid of
charset conversions entirely? For instance, here is a statement from
Bigger question in my mind, can we get rid of the two functions
completely? Both are implemented in the parser and not as actual
functions. To modularize the parser these types of functions have to
go away (there are very few of them left).
They are not functions, they are SQL syntactical clauses. I do not
think that you gain anything by removing CAST. CONVERT is probably a
different thing when charsets are removed?
Cast is a standard and useful feature for forcing conversions. I see no
purpose for Convert with a single internal character set.
Could somebody say something about the general philosophy for
collations? How do they interact with comparisons?
