FYI...Brian, do we have the IPv6 work going into Drizzle? -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Any Update on IPv6 Support? (Re: 34830) Date: Wed, 01 Oct 2008 19:57:29 -0500 From: Nicholas Williams <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
This inquiry is regarding a year-old Internals thread titled "IPv6 Data Type Patch" that can be referenced here: http://lists.mysql.com/internals/34830 I'm curious if Milos has any updates on this development? The IPv6 specification is very mature; the U.S. Federal Government has mandated all federal government networks to be IPv6 networks by the end of 2009. Verizon internet services expects to have the majority of its customers on IPv6 by mid-2009. PostgreSQL has data types "inet", "cidr", "abbrev", and "macaddr" to handle advanced storage of Internet number types. I, myself, am beginning the development of a next-generation datacenter, hopefully to open in Summer 2009, that will include IPv4 and IPv6 address allocation and encourage the use of IPv6 for virtual private network deployments. It is an important standard that needs to be embraced by developer communities globally. Currently, I use an integer unsigned column to store IPv4 addresses. An IPv6 data type wouldn't be as urgent to me if there were a "hugeint" datatype of sorts that I could store a 128-bit integer in, but there isn't. Milos, I'd personally like to apply this patch, if it's available, to my server and begin testing it in my systems to provide some feedback. Is there somewhere I can download it, or can you send it to me, so that I can test it out? Hopefully this patch, in a testing status tho it may be, can prevent me from having to port all of my code and convert my entire database to PostreSQL just so that I can begin supporting IPv6.
