Hello! I've put together a draft for the new Drizzle protocol here:

This is not feature complete, but it gives the core functionality and lays the groundwork for a dynamic protocol that can easily be expanded. It has some roots of the existing MySQL protocol, but all fixed-size structures have been removed. Other features, such as check-sums, will most likely be pluggable and enabled through new parameters. If you feel I've done something completely wrong, please tell me. :) I understand it may take a few drafts to get the right start.
