The only part the above does not answer is "should the database know how to load files". For a remote execution I agree with you, for a local... we shall see.

Remote is a little confusing (or is it just me). Do you mean the server that is remote from the client or the client that is remote from server?

Perhaps we could agree on "server side" or "client side" execution? Otherwise, it depends on your perspective: Do you think as a user or as a database developer?
