I'm investigating an ultra-light server side JavaScript implementation
that can support multiple instantiations of a given script. Has anyone
run into a JavaScript SQL API that they like? IBM has one that could
only have come from IBM. Google Gears has one that looks ok, but not
great.
Anyone have any favorite candidates?
The purpose of all this is to support server side scripting in a
reasonably powerful language. The basic idea is:
* Client establishes connection to server (including authentication)
* Client calls API with a script and a set of property/value pairs.
* The server prepares the script if it isn't already cached then
creates an instance
* The script is executed. What ever it returns or throws is
returned to the client, up to and including a cluster of objects
* The client interacts with whatever is returned with a suitable API.
This is in the same ecological niche as stored procedures with a couple
of exceptions. One is that the procedures are not durably server
resident. Another is that no special privileges are use them. Finally,
the scripting system is properly layered, not inside, the database engine.
I've considered Lua and JavaScript. Between exception handling and
object inheritance, JavaScript has a clear edge.
In the unlikely event that anyone else is interested, I'd be willing to
open source whatever I come up with.
