Actually - both forms are standard (1999 and 2003) sql. The case expression is defined in book 2, "foundation" and the case statement is defined in book 4, "persistent stored modules"
Roland is quite right - I didn't look into book 4. I'd rather not see Drizzle deprecate standard features.
