How about GMP? It's apparently fast, and it's LGPL, and if we use it there are some other things we can use it for too.
Interestingly, GMP and MPFR are new-ish dependencies in the GNU toolchain, so you might have them handy already.
Seriously, if they're good enough for GCC and they'd do the job for us, what's /not/ to like?
