If you have more than just a few tables, you'd probably care...but then again, I would prefer ORDER BY with the I_S like you mention below.
I think that's what ORDER BY is for. and SHOW TABLES should just be mapped in command line client to I_S query if we want to keep it. P.S. in my basic-discovery branch (proposed for merging) I changed things so that the list is not alphabetical (well... it is, but on per module basis, so your ARCHIVE tables are ordered, and so are the rest, but not with each other)
