I said "yeah, looks like a bug"... we should probably just settle on
2bytes. Although.... 4 bytes does mean 32bit aligned... which is
mighty useful when dealing with memory.
Perhaps we want to make some decision about this and how we deal with
in memory format versus what the engines get.
