This would depend on the engine. For instance, a column store would
conceivably be able to do this quite easily, and row stores could do it
with some work.
There was a thread previously with ideas about improvements to the
storage engine API to allow better communication between the kernel and
the storage engine about what the engine can and cannot do for certain
statements. I expect that your feature request plays into that thread
nicely...
