The filesystem based one would be useful for two reasons.

It would make a much better "example" template for storage engines than the
current storage engines, and thus spur the development of still more storage
engines.

And a filesystem based storage engine would be useful on clustered
filesystem appliances, such as Isilon and NetApp fileservers, which are
currently not very good for storage engines such as InnoDB.
