Hello from Seattle, USA and Järvenpää, Finland,

This morning we had an IRC meeting with Google to finalize our students and
mentors for the Google Summer of Code.

We had 21 applicants this year, far more than last year. And among those
there were more excellent proposals than we could accept with our seven
slots that Google gave us, which was about the same as last year's number.
It is always hard to leave a great proposal out. It pains me to say it but
there are a few out there who have submitted really good code that has
already made it into Drizzle that did not get slots this year. It doesn't
necessarily mean your code wasn't as good as someone else's, or that your
proposal wasn't excellent. We just had to pick the seven that matched as
best as possible with the mentors we have and the project priorities.

I hope that all of you will find some other summer job (or perhaps a GSoC
job in another project) that you very well deserve. I also hope that you
have become inspired to stay with Drizzle, even if not in a paid-for role.
All of the senior developers are volunteers too, and we want you to join
us. And of course, unless this is your graduating year in college, there's
always GSoC 2013!

The benefits of contributing to Drizzle and open source projects goes
beyond this one summer job. This is an extremely talented network of people
who learn from each other, solve difficult problems, challenge each other
to be better, and even alert each other to relevant jobs. You never know
when the person you are chatting with on IRC fixing a bug in Drizzle, will
be working at a company in the future and say "Hey, I know this one person
who hacks on Drizzle, they would be perfect for this job." Working on a
project like this is a serious bonus on one's CV, and this group of people
pushes each other to be better developers.

So to all of you who applied, Thank you. Announcements for those who
received slots will go out on Monday. Regardless of whether you received a
slot or not your contribution is noticed and appreciated. Remember that
contributions are really the most important factor in accepting a GSoC
applicant, and you should reapply if you are eligible next year.

To all of the mentors, thank you for volunteering your time this summer!
And to all of you who contribute in whatever way, Thanks also to you, you
make Drizzle a special project to be involved in.
