There should be an option to ./configure to disable it (i forget what
it is)

Are you building from bzr or tarball?

We have it so that from tarball warnings are ignored, but from bzr they
are treated as errors. This is due to the thinking that developers will
be working from BZR and should fix their code not to produce compiler warnings.
