Ok have been trying to merge Brian, Andrew and Patrick's changes and
have struck out on all 3. Both Brian and Patrick's changes are
breaking when building with distcheck. Andrew is having numerous
issues with the boost option stuff per his email. So will try merging
some other branches for now.
