I think what you're describing was fixed in the 5.3 release as bug 2602: https://jira.duraspace.org/plugins/servlet/mobile#issue/DS-2602 "Clicking on a letter when browsing by title or year when browsing by date does not work" So the fix is to upgrade to the current version of the software.
