This is solved in our addons for images (for example digitalized books) or pdf
visualization but it can be also generalized to other kind of materials. We use
items with multiple bitstreams with enriched metadata.

See
https://dspace-cris.4science.it/handle/123456789/40
https://dspace-cris.4science.it/explore?bitstream_id=202&handle=123456789/40&provider=iiif-image

on the left panel you have two view Index and Thumbnails, if you click on Index
your will see the Table of Content of the book.

This is actually a metadata stored at the single bitstream level (a single
image/page). On the right panel if you click on More information you will get
the metadata from the item (book) but it is also possible to include other
metadata related to the current page (maybe the image size, resolution, some
notes, etc.).

These addons are developed as part of our make-IT-open campaign, see
http://www.4science.it/en/dspace-add-ons/
http://www.4science.it/en/document-viewer/
http://www.4science.it/en/iiif-image-viewer/

we looks for supporters to improve the addons adding the advanced features
listed in our roadmap and ultimatelyrelease as open source.
Best regards,
Andrea

We’ve had similar challenges, Alston, and have had to determine what to do on a
case-by-case basis, since the best practices may vary depending on the nature
of the material.

For the project you describe, I think that this sounds like a great way to show
the pages of the notebook in their original context, yet include additional
metadata for each page.

Subject: [dspace-community] handling complex, multi-part items in DSpace

Has anyone had experience putting complex, multi-part items in DSpace? For
example, a field notebook with many pages. We consider it very important for
the metadata for each individual page to be made available. We have considered
making each page its own item for that reason but feel that would be unwieldy
because of quantity and while we would record the information about the book it
belongs to in dc.relations fields, it will be harder for the user to see the
relational context because the records between the pages will not actually be
linked. Therefore, we are thinking of making the "item" be the field notebook
as a whole and adding bitstreams for the whole field notebook as a pdf and a
csv file of the metadata for each individual page. Any thoughts are
appreciated.
