I'm not a metadata expert, but I would think that translations and alternatives are different things. For example, the text published in the US as _To Visit the Queen_ was published in the UK as _On Her Majesty's Wizardly Service_ -- I would say that is an alternate title. Rendering the words of either of those titles into German (for example) would be a translation. I would assert that the choice *does* matter, and that finding different approaches at different repositories means that we are not giving enough attention to information interchange across the repository community. Another fun question: should we be translating titles at all? The author(s) may request or suggest a translated title, but is it good practice to do translations of the metadata for others' works?
