David, at the Smithsonian Libraries, we use Dspace for research datasets as
well.

We typically do this when a scholar (frantically) contacts us and needs a DOI
and a place to put supporting data for an article they’ve submitted.

The datasets are mostly pretty small and fixed (that is, not versioned or
subject to being updated).

And although it is not only a problem with datasets, when files are over a
certain size, it can be difficult to upload them to Dspace using the web
interface (GUI). Browsers often time out when uploading large files to our
Dspace instance.

I realize we can use the command line to upload files but it just adds another
wrinkle to our established workflow.

Also, because we mediate deposits to our repository (library staff do most of
the work on behalf of the scholars) it can be a bit tedious if someone gives us
a set of 40-50 files to upload to a single item record. Sometimes they’re OK
with zipping the whole package up and presenting it that way, but these are
things to bear in mind and ask up front.

For reference, here is our research data collection:

Hope that helps,

Alvin

Subject: [dspace-community] Research Data Repository

Is anyone using DSpace as a repository for research data? Are you happy with
your set-up? We need something to meet the new grant requirements. Comments
welcomed. Even better pointers to your repository. Things to beware of,
metadata fields needed, helpful tips all welcomed.

Thanks,
David Bigwood
