Hi Gail,

At this time DSpace doesn't have a way to customize the alt-text for
thumbnails of Items, or logos of Communities/Collections. Currently (at
least in the XMLUI), there is alt-text for these images, but it's very
generic (e.g. "Collection's logo" and "Thumbnail").

This feature to customize alt-text is not explicitly on the Roadmap
anywhere, but we are striving to improve accessibility in DSpace 7. It
*might* be possible to think about storing alt-text as metadata (on a Logo
or Thumbnail Bitstream), which might make this easier to achieve in DSpace
7. The DSpace 7 UI will use the (new) REST API, and all metadata is
available via the REST API. So, storing it as metadata might make it easy
to reuse in the DSpace 7 UI. (As a side note, DSpace 7 will have a Preview
release in the near future -- there will be opportunities for community
members to give it a test and report accessibility issues, bugs, etc.)
Currently, though, I'll also admit, DSpace 7 has very generic alt-text, as
you can see on the (early) demo site at: https://dspace7-demo.atmire.com/

In any case, the best way to get a feature "on the radar" is to create a
ticket for it in ticketing system at https://jira.duraspace.org/projects/DS/
While we cannot guarantee all requests will be implemented immediately
(depends usually on finding an interested developer), it's also a great way
to get the discussion started -- and sometimes just doing that will find a
developer with an idea or interest on making it happen quickly.
