Hi Stuart, the handle server is pretty stable, it doesn't do a lot.

Most import / ingest methods have a flag (like "restore" in AIP) to say
"don't mint new identifiers for this item"

I don't remember if 1.8.x had AIP backup, but even just the simple SIP
style item export / import should work that way for you as well.

BTW, 6.4 shouldn't be too far off so hopefully you'll get a few bugfixes
for free! (a very easy minor upgrade if the timing doesn't work out for
that)
