Hi Stuart, the handle server is pretty stable, it doesn't do a lot. Most import / ingest methods have a flag (like "restore" in AIP) to say "don't mint new identifiers for this item" https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSDOC6x/AIP+Backup+and+Restore https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSDOC6x/Ingesting+Content+and+Metadata
I don't remember if 1.8.x had AIP backup, but even just the simple SIP style item export / import should work that way for you as well. BTW, 6.4 shouldn't be too far off so hopefully you'll get a few bugfixes for free!
