Hi,

A 500 error means that there is an error occurring on your backend.  You 
will need to look in the DSpace logs and/or Tomcat logs for information on 
why the backend is erroring out.

Check our Troubleshooting guide for more hints on locating errors on the 
backend:

Once you find the error, I'd recommend checking our Common Install Issues 
as it's possible you are hitting one of 
those.
