I waited for a day in case someone offered a better idea, and to ponder the problem. Without active cooperation from the target repositories, I don't see any better way than screen-scraping. This will be an *interesting* challenge, since DSpace has used three radically different UI frameworks implementing subtly distinct path designs. If I were in your place, I would seriously consider whether it might be easier to vigorously advocate PMH to those repositories.
