Hi,
first of all use a stable release (in your description you mention 1.4 alpha
1). The latest stable release is 1.5.1.
1.5.2 will be released on the 6th of April.
ant (see http://ant.apache.org/) belongs to the prerequistes for DSpace and
fresh_install is an ant target.
Up to 1.4.2 after fulfilling the other installation steps (see documentation
for details) you run ant fresh_install from the dspace source directory.
From 1.5 on there is the mvn package step prior to running ant fresh_install.
This command among other things creates a directory
[dspace-source]/dspace/target//dspace-n-SNAPSHOT-build.dir (n is the version
number e.g. 1.5.1) from which the ant fresh_install should be executed.
