I hope you don't mind, but I have copied this email to the DSpace
development email list, as you may also get reply from other developers.

Thanks for getting in touch - we are always looking for more people to
join the development effort.

The process is quite easy - develop new features that fit in with the
general scope of the software, submit them as patches to our issue
tracker (http://jira.dspace.org/) following our contributor guidelines
(http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/ContributionGuidelines). Newly
submitted patches are usually discussed each week in the developers
meeting (an open meeting that anyone is welcome and encouraged to join
in on IRC - #dspace on freenode.net there are often people in IRC all
day long) to decide if they are going to be included in DSpace or not.

We also encourage the philosophy of 'share early and share often'. So
if you are thinking of developing a new feature, post to the dspace-
devel list about your intentions, and seek feedback. You amy find that
other people are already working on the same feature, or people would
like to collaborate with you, or people would be happy to test code
for you. This enables us to work together.

I'd encourage you to submit the work you have done as patches in JIRA.
There is likely to be a delay for a few weeks though before they get
looked at as we are reaching the final stages of releasing the first
beta version of version 1.6, so we now have a feature freeze and are
about to enter a period of testing. But once 1.6 is released, we'll be
ready to look at what to include in the next version.

I hope this helps, and if anyone else has anything to add, please post
to this email list too.

Many thanks,

Stuart Lewis
